Medina Raptor Center brought Migisi for everyone to view ibn the Event Center.

The Friday evening program was followed by the Saturday morning tour. We saw 9 bald eagles on this watch.

Rich Stelzer (the guy with the HUGE spotting scope) reported his 2 chicks have hatched at the Groveport nest.

Mohican Valley Eagle Watch.

We saw 13 Eagles on our Saturday tour.

And Susan H. shared her pictures of the golden eagle they saw on Wally Road last month. Thanks to her for sharing the great photos of the Wally Road Eagles frmo this Winter.

Jon has also been hearing more reports of nests around the area, and throughout the state, and will share updates at the program.

I don't know Jon's definition of "eagle hauntings"....so maybe he's alredy confirmed this. But I was very fortunate this morning on my way to work. As I drove north on 250 out of Ashland, I spotted a large bird off of the right side of the road, and turned down a side road to confirm my suspicion. An adult eagle perched atop a tree. I snapped several pictures of this eagle. I then drove down the road to turn around and snap some more pictures and actually spotted the nest!! Snapped several pictures of that as well. Have not had a chance to upload them yet, or I would attach them. I think that nest is considerably larger than the CR77 nest.This was on Township Road 926, just east of 250. This is south of Bailey Lakes proper.

I have no idea what it takes to become an official spotter or eagle watcher, but if the folks who live across the road from the nest, with a tripod set up in their front window, aren't nominated, I would be honored!

Since my patient travels took me to Huron, and Vermilion, and on into West Cleveland today. I also was blessed to see a large mature bald eagle perched in a tree near Vermilion, as well as a pair circling just off Rte 2 at Sunnyside Rd as well. Such a thrill.

I wanted to tell you also, that last week I was headed north on Rte 60 out of Loudonville and had the thrill of seeing both a mature eagle and an immature flying and perched just south of McKay. I don't know if that is close enough that those might be the Honey Creek eagles or 2 different eagles.

All of this coupled with the sight of an adult flying over I-77 north of Cambridge last week have made a wonderful week for me!

Update and Next Tour

Next Tour is March 6, 2010. Starting at 7am from Mohican River Inn on Wally Road in Loudonville, just a few yards north of Knox County.

From Jon:
...Hi, just wanted to confirm that Knox Lake is incubating as of 2/14/10 and seems well settled in.

Two Loudenville area nests are also on-Lake Fork and Honey Creek.

Weiler in Morrow Co. is inconclusive(deep nest) but I did see an adult fly nearby. Will check again after storm.

The old house in front of the Knox nest burned to the groud receintly but no negative effects to the nest.

Mt. Zion(Gambier) could be in trouble however due to a mate switch and tree cutting in the area. We'll see after the quarry pond melts off.

Brinkhaven's old nest has been worked on and I saw one bird present in the valley. Due to snow I won't get there for at least another week.

Have you Set your calendar for March 19th? 'Migisi' will be here again from Medina Raptor Center, with a special guest from the Columbus Zoo (the #1 Zoo in the nation by the way.)

Eagles galore

Jon found a mature just afternoon today perched on a Sycamore north of the Lake Fork confluence on Wally Road. Wings spread out, maybe trying to cool down.

Then beyond that east hill found 3 more feeding in a field, sharing a lunch. Brought Jon's total to 7 at that point of the day.

2 immatures flying at north end of Mohican Wilderness

Eagle Watch Tours are for the benefit of creating a greater awareness
of our great Bald Eagle population in the Mohican and Kokosing
watersheds. While the bald eagle is off the endangered species list,
their habitat is still in a fragile balance.

The tour cost for adults is $20 per person and by reservation. This helps take care of costs such as transportation, and extra funds are forwarded to Medina Raptor
Center or Ohio Bird Sanctuary, both organizations rehabiliatate bald
eagles and both support the Mohican Valley Eagle Watch.

Tours are Saturday mornings in 2010 from 7am to 11am, with some minor
adjustments made in advance as needed.

January Eagle Watch Tour

January Tour Results
In total we saw 12 bald eagles Saturday morning—every seat was filled as we braved the cold weather.
Before we saw any eagles we watched 2 coyotes run across the frozen Pleasant Hill Lake as a snow squall moved between the hills. That made a beautiful Winter scene which we enjoyed despite our cold toes. Even after the Saturday tour the sightings continued throughout the day…1 more on Wally Road, and 1 south of Greer.
The Mohican River was not frozen yesterday, but it was amazing to watch it slowly ice over today hour by hour. The coldest report I heard was -5 degrees F in Greer at the southern end of Wally Road.
Saw 3 more bald eagles today (Sunday) while driving the River between Wally Road and Brinkhaven. One in Greer, one at the Devil’s Backbone south of Greer, and one in Brinkhaven at the covered bridge.
Also enjoyed watching the flock of turkeys at the corn field below the bridge past the Devil’s Backbone: Have you ever seen a flock of turkeys ¼ mile long and 10 turkeys deep? I didn’t keep counting once I hit 200.
